You have, no doubt heard all the buzz about the book. First of all, I am amazed that this particular book got so much hype, because there have been literally hundreds of books out there written on the subject of the "laws of attraction". I guess that proves the power of being on Oprah! Just get her to endorse your book or product and you are an instant millionaire! I have been teaching the principals of The Secret for years in my "Evolution Workforce Seminars" and also have many references to it in my book.
In case you don't know the principals of The Secret, it is simply this: You attract what you believe. If you believe you are a loser and don't have much to offer, that is what you will attract.....other losers just like you. As the old saying goes....water seeks it's own level. So, what you feel and think is what you become. We all move toward whatever we think about the most. Pretty scary, huh?
I bring the subject of The Secret up as a reminder. Look at where you are right now. Are you living the life you want? Are you working where you want? Are you working for someone you like and respect? And, most importantly, are you doing what you want to be doing?
Fear comes in many forms. We often stay in a situation or job we are not that happy with because we don't know what is out there. The unknown can be scary. So, it is easier to stay where we are, with the familiar, even if it is not fulfilling us.
I know many of you in the building industry are unemployed and struggling. With all the lay-offs and division closures that have occurred over the last months, many have been displaced. In fact, the unemployment rate has increased in many industries throughout California. Sounds pretty bleak, doesn't it?
Again, how you perceive things out there is how you will, no doubt, respond to it. So, let me challenge you with a thought. What if being laid-off is actually a blessing in disguise? Maybe this is the jolt you needed to gather your courage and look at what kind of work would really make you happy. Sometimes when we are pushed out of one situation, it forces us to re-assess our goals and dreams, and hopefully move in a new direction.
I always dreamed of becoming a published writer. It took a few hundred starts and stops to realize my dream, but I never lost sight of it. And, with the slowdown in the market place, (yes, my business has been affected, too), I have come to realize that there are other things besides recruiting that I have always wanted to do. For one, I have always dreamed of having my very own call-in radio talk show or a cable show on TV. Well, I'm not there yet, but I just did a guest spot on my first TV show here is San Diego. So the wheels are turning and I am not going to give up until I get there!! How about you??
It seems ironic, but Barbara Streisand has always had a profound fear of performing on stage in front of crowds, yet that's how she became famous. When she was asked about how she conquered her fear, she said she learned to harness it and use it to her advantage. She said, "Fear has been the power behind my best work".
I would love to hear about your dreams and where you are in the process of realizing them. It's a powerful thing, realizing a dream. Carpe Diem!!
